Book Description

This book is the first of its kind to demonstrate how to weave beads using the algorithms of cellular automata (CA), blending mathematics with art. It is a how-to-craft guide that focuses more on the creative process than the mathematical theory yet provides enough mathematical background to help readers understand and manipulate CA algorithms. With a variety of CA rules and designs, this book inspires readers to create their own art, patterns, and jewelry. The techniques explained in this book can be applied to many artistic mediums, including coloring (see Appendix), painting, tile laying, crochet, and quilt making. By following the clear instructions, readers will learn to create beaded artwork using CA methods and explore the intersection of mathematics and visual design. This book is perfect for those who enjoy crafting and want to explore the mathematics behind their creations. It’s ideal for crafters, designers, and anyone interested in mathematical art.

About the Author

Gwen Fisherearned her MA in Mathematics from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She was an Associate Professor of Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, specializing in the mathematical education of teachers. There, she wrote and taught a full course on mathematics and visual art. Around that time, in 2005, she began weaving beads. Soon thereafter, she started writing about her discoveries. She has served as an editor and reviewer academic journals and conferences and has published academic papers on mathematical bead weaving, felting, quilting, and mathematical art. She has sold thousands of tutorials for bead weaving on her website http://beadinfinitum.com, and on Etsy at https://www.etsy.com/shop/gwenbeads. Find her as “gwenbeads” on social media.

Roger Antonsenwas an Associate Professor in the Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo, Norway, where he was a member of the research group Analytical Solutions and Reasoning. He was also affiliated with the research group Logic and Intelligent Data (LogID). In addition, Roger served as a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley, California. He earned his PhD in computer science, specializing in mathematical logic, automated reasoning, and proof theory.Roger’s academic interests spanned several fields, including cellular automata, logical calculi, proof theory, mathematical logic, complexity theory, combinatorics, and the philosophy of mathematics. He was deeply engaged in science communication and outreach, contributing to public understanding through a column in Norway’s largest printed newspaper, delivering talks around the world, and creating educational mathematical videos.Roger’s work has left an enduring impact on the mathematical and computational communities.
