Book Description
This volume brings together 30 chapters across five parts, offering a structured, in-depth survey of asymptotic analysis and its applications. Readers will find rigorous treatments of orthogonal polynomials, boundary layer problems, saddle-point integrals, turning point theory, Airy and Bessel expansions, special functions, and modern approaches to difference equations, differential equations, Riemann–Hilbert problems, integrals, and singular perturbation problems. Each chapter blends classical foundations with recent breakthroughs, making the book both a comprehensive reference and a graduate-level textbook with exercises for hands-on learning. Over the past three decades, asymptotic analysis has become indispensable in number theory, combinatorics, probability and statistics, mathematical physics, engineering, and applied sciences, equipping researchers and students with powerful methods for solving complex problems. This book not only surveys the latest advances in asymptotic methods but also demonstrates their practical applications across diverse mathematical models. Designed for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, researchers, and instructors, the text can be used as a reference guide to modern asymptotic techniques or adapted into course modules, strengthening both theoretical understanding and applied problem-solving.

About the Author
Xiang-Sheng Wangreceived his BA in Mathematics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2004 and his PhD in 2009 through a joint program between the University of Science and Technology of China and City University of Hong Kong. From 2009 to 2016, he held academic and research positions at City University of Hong Kong, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Southeast Missouri State University, and York University. He joined the Department of Mathematics at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in August 2016, where he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in August 2022. His research lies primarily in interdisciplinary areas of applied mathematics, with interests including asymptotic analysis, differential equations, mathematical biology, and orthogonal polynomials.
Roderick Wongearned his BA in Mathematics from San Diego State College (1965) and PhD from the University of Alberta (1969). He began his academic career at the University of Manitoba, where he advanced from Assistant to Full Professor and served as Head of Applied Mathematics (1986–1994). In 1994, he joined City University of Hong Kong as Professor and Head of Mathematics, later founding the Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences, which he directed until 2019. He also held senior leadership roles, including Dean of Science and Engineering, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, Vice-President (Research & Technology), and Vice-President for Development & External Relations. Upon retiring in 2019, he was named Emeritus Professor in 2020. Roderick Wong served as President of both the Canadian Applied Mathematics Society and the Hong Kong Mathematical Society, and Vice-President of the Canadian Mathematical Society. He was also active in editorial leadership across numerous international journals. His many honors include the Killam Research Fellowship, Rh Award, Fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada, foreign membership in the Academy of Sciences of Turin, Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur by the French government, membership in the European Academy of Sciences, and Doctorate Honoris Causa from Ovidius University.
