Book Description

While the climate crisis poses a threat to planetary health, digital transformation continues to reshape our societies. This book gives you the clarity, confidence, and tools to drive meaningful change.

Updated with the latest trends, case studies, and insights, including responsible and sustainable AI lifecycle governance, it walks you through every stage of developing and implementing a sustainable IT strategy.

The book is structured in three parts. Part 1 explores the “why,” grounding you in the reality of the urgent climate crisis we face today, how we arrived here, the planetary boundaries we must restore, and the broader impact of IT on society. Part 2 covers the “what,” outlining the practical actions you can take to drive meaningful returns on sustainable investments and build a greener future. Part 3 focuses on the “how,” establishing baselines, setting direction, and applying real-world case studies to help you translate intent to impactful global outcomes.

Whether you’re building a sustainability strategy from the ground up or enhancing existing initiatives, this book prepares you to lead the way with confidence and deliver outcomes that matter.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“I am thrilled that this second edition introduces new and expanded chapters related to responsible AI, social sustainability, and sustainable architecture and data, and highlights best practices and lessons learned from nearly 20 new case studies. It doesn’t just describe the macro levers that can be pulled for sustainable IT; it also provides blueprints for practical solutions, and it is all very relevant to today’s challenges.

This book is a way to unite those fantastic problem solvers, galvanize global action through collaboration, share information, and set standards, not only to continue to hold society’s infrastructure together, but to ensure our infrastructure can be sustained for businesses, people, and the planet for many years to come.”

Dr. Katia Chaban, NTT DATA’s Head of Global IT Sustainability Center of Expertise

“This book provides practical tools to help shape a strategy, fully informed with external market, environmental, and social inputs, and shows how to turn that into impactful action. In developing your handprint, your footprint, and your heartprint, you will have a strong, principle-based approach to planning.

This book gives me hope and has added to my commitment to keep working with businesses to make progress toward delivering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

Sue Allchurch, Chief of Outreach and Engagement, UN Global Compact

“This second edition of the Sustainable IT Playbook for Technology Leaders could not be more timely. The new chapters on responsible AI, social sustainability, and sustainability data expand the conversation in ways that reflect the realities that leaders face today. Each of these themes underscores a simple truth: sustainability and social responsibility are no longer siloed projects. They  touch every decision we make, from how we govern new technologies, to how we engage with our communities, to how  we measure progress and hold ourselves accountable.”

David Entwistle, President and CEO, Stanford Health Care
