Book Description

This collection reflects key milestones in research, addressing fundamental theories, emerging trends, and real-world applications of two closely connected disciplines of computer science: semantic computing and artificial intelligence (AI).

The rapid evolution of computing has led to transformative advancements in semantic computing and AI simultaneously. Both fields have driven innovation in data processing, knowledge representation, and intelligent decision-making. This book presents a carefully curated selection of articles from the International Journal of Semantic Computing (IJSC), spanning from 2007 to 2025, capturing the journey in which the two disciplines became more and more connected, while expanding our understanding of machine intelligence.

The intersection of semantic computing and AI has become increasingly significant, offering sophisticated solutions to complex computational problems and enhancing the way machines interpret and interact with human knowledge. This book serves as a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and students seeking to understand the evolution and impact of semantic computing and AI.

About the Author

Dr Florian Schimanke is a professor for business informatics at HSW – University of Applied Sciences in Hamelin, Germany. He received his doctorate degree from the University of Bamberg for his research on the effect of using machine-learning-based spaced repetition in mobile learning games on the learning success and is an active member of the international e-learning community. He has published several peer-reviewed papers on this topic at renowned conferences and journals. For more than twelve years he has been organizing the annual MTEL (Multimedia Technologies for E-Learning) workshop, held in conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia (ISM) and is also a general co-chair for the IEEE AIxHEART (Artificial Intelligence x Humanities, Education, and ART) conference. At HSW Florian gives lectures on topics like IT networks, cyber security, server systems, cloud computing and virtualization.

Dr Mustafa Sert is a Senior Researcher in the Department of EECS at the University of California, Irvine, and a Professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence Engineering at Başkent University, Turkey. He received his MSc and PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from Gazi University. With over 25 years of experience in academia and industry, his teaching and research focus on audio signal processing, machine learning, speech- and language-based audio analysis, semantic multimedia, and multimodal learning. Dr Sert serves as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Başkent University and has held several academic leadership roles. He actively contributes to the research community through technical and organizing committee roles in major conferences such as IEEE ICME, IEEE ISM, IEEE ICCE, ACM Multimedia, VLDB, and FUZZ-IEEE. He also reviews for journals, including IEEE/ACM TASLP, IEEE TMM, IEEE SPL, IEEE TNNLS, and IEEE TPAMI. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and an active member of the IEEE TCs on TCSEM, TCMC, TCCC, and CTSoc's AVS, CCN, and MDA. He has received two Best Reviewer Awards from IEEE ICME and an Outstanding Area Chair Award from ACM Multimedia.

Dr Bryan Chou is currently an assistant professor of computer engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Previously, he was a senior software engineer at Samsung Canada. He received his PhD degree from the University of California, Irvine in 2019. Dr Chou received his BS degree from National Cheng Kung University and his MS degree from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. Dr Chou currently specialises in distributed cloud-based systems and backend engineering, and his main research interests include graph algorithms, performance enhancement algorithms, and interdisciplinary AI. Dr Chou has been actively involved in IEEE conferences since 2017, holding various positions in organizing conferences and facilitating scholarly dialogue on innovative research. He is the Programme Co-Chair for the IEEE AIMHC 2024 conference, the Programme Co-Chair for the IEEE AIxB 2025 conference, and the Finance Chair for the IEEE ISM 2024 conference.
