Book Description
The networking of devices, machines and systems plays a key role in Industry 4.0. This textbook conveys the basic knowledge required for the successful use of intelligent networked production systems. It is aimed at students from the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering as well as process and environmental engineering, and is also suitable for practitioners who are involved in the automation of production. The book is divided into three parts. Part I is dedicated to the basics of networking and bus systems, including their procedures, methods and structures of local networks; hardware and software components of embedded systems; the properties of selected fieldbus systems; and open communication between networked systems based on Open Platform Communications. Part II deals with the Industrial Ethernet as well as wireless and mobile communication systems. Part III deals with the networking of cyber-physical systems, which form the basis for Industry 4.0 scenarios. Its coverage includes the architectures and services for Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things, communication infrastructures and protocols for Industry 4.0 production systems and networking in the digital factory. The basics of networked systems are illustrated using numerous application cases. More than 80 exercises provide the opportunity to test and deepen the knowledge acquired. The solutions to all the exercises, as well as additional supplementary material are also available.

About the Author
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Reinhard Langmann was a full professor for Process Informatics in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Information Technology at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf, Germany from 1993 to 2019. He has been working on the use of information and communication technology to automate technical processes for over three decades, and has written a number of specialist articles and textbooks on this subject. At present, Dr Langmann is the Chairman of the EduNet World Association e.V. and a board member of the German Qualifications Federation e.V. and the German association New Automation e.V. Dr Langmann has participated in several national and international research projects and has authored 7 textbooks and more than 50 papers in professional journals, as well as about 70 presentations at national and international conferences. He is the author and holder of 9 patents in the field of automation engineering and web technology. He was the founder and director of the Competence Centre Automation Düsseldorf (CCAD) and head of the Düsseldorf Telelaboratory from 2010 until his retirement in 2019. He is a member of several scientific programme committees (e.g. EDUCON, ICBL, MICAI, STE, KST) and editorial boards of scientific journals such as the International Journal of Online and Biomedical Engineering (iJOE). In recent years, Dr Langmann has been project coordinator in several national R&D projects on Industry 4.0 & Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Smart Services. An example of this is the Web-oriented Automation System (WOAS) project (2012–2014), in which a web-oriented architecture for automation systems was developed. Based on this architecture, an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform that uses the Smart Services paradigm to design and operate automation systems was created. The project was supported by 10 German industrial companies. In the CICS project (2015–2017), Dr Langmann worked as project leader together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems (Fraunhofer IKS) in Munich on cloud-based industrial control services. The aim of this project was to use control algorithms as services from the cloud. From 2019 to 2023 he was the deputy project coordinator in the ERASMUS+ ETAT (Education & Training) project for Automation 4.0 in Thailand. At present, he is the deputy project coordinator in the new ERASMUS+ project ETATEI (Education and Training in Automation Technology for Ethiopian and Djibouti Industry).
