About the Author

Dr Alejandra J Maganais the WC Furnas Professor in Enterprise Excellence in the School of Applied and Creative Computing and Professor in the School of Engineering Education at Purdue University, USA. Dr Magana holds a BE in Information Systems and an MS in Technology, both acquired from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico. She went on to obtain her MS in Educational Technology and PhD in Engineering Education, both from Purdue University. Her research program investigates how model-based cognition in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) can be better supported by computational disciplinary practices, including computation, modeling and simulation, data science practices, and artificial intelligence. Dr Magana is currently serving as Deputy Editor for the Journal of Engineering Education, Associate Editor for Computer Applications in Engineering Education and co-director of the Education Department for IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications. As of 2025, she has published 120 refereed journal articles along with 121 peer-reviewed conference proceedings. In 2015, Dr Magana received the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious award for faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and their integration within the context of the mission of their organizations. In 2016, she was conferred the status of Purdue Faculty Scholar for being on an accelerated path toward academic distinction. Recognized for her excellence in teaching, she was inducted into the Purdue University Teaching Academy in 2022. Dr Magana has also been honored, at the national and international levels, with three early-career faculty awards: in 2010 from the American Educational Research Association, in 2012 from the American Society of Engineering Education, and in 2014 from the International Society for the Learning Sciences. In 2024, she was a Fulbright Specialist Project Awardee for the project titled: Teaching and Learning Evidence-Based Practices in STEM, Czech Technical University, Czech Republic. In the same year, she was conferred the grade of Fellow Member for the American Society for Engineering Education for her outstanding contributions to engineering and engineering technology education.
