About the Author

Dr Michael Sony is a Senior Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University, UK. Prior to this, he was a Senior Lecturer in Digital Business at Wits Business School, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He was also the programme director of the post-graduate programme as the Chair of Digital Business at Wits Business School. He has previously worked at Namibia University of Science and Technology, Windhoek, Namibia, as a Senior lecturer in Industrial Engineering. He holds a PhD (Operations Management) and Master of Engineering degree (Industrial Engineering) from Goa University, India. He has authored 76 research articles in various international journals and has written two books. Dr Sony also has industrial experience in the power, mining, and manufacturing sectors, including senior management positions. Additionally, he has consulting experience in the areas of operations management and industrial engineering. His research interests include Industry 4.0, Quality 4.0, operational excellence, and digital transformation.

Professor Jiju Antony is recognised worldwide as a leader in the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology for achieving and sustaining operational excellence. He is a Professor at Northumbria University, UK. Prior to this, he was a Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering and a certified LSS Master Black Belt in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, UAE. He has a proven track record of conducting internationally leading research in the fields of quality management, continuous improvement and operational excellence. Professor Antony has authored over 450 journal, conference and white papers and 12 textbooks. He has published over 280 papers on Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma topics and is considered to be one of the leading authors on these subjects. He has an h-index of 87, with a total of over 28,000 citations on quality management and operational excellence, the highest in the world for these topics. He is currently serving as the Editor of the International Journal of Lean Six Sigma and an Associate Editor of Total Quality Management and Business Excellence, TQM (Emerald), and Quality in Education (ASQ), and he is on the Editorial Board of six international journals. Professor Antony has worked on a number of consultancy projects with blue-chip companies such as Rolls-Royce, Bosch, Siemens, Parker Pen, Johnson and Johnson, GE Plastics, Ford, Scottish Power, Tata Motors, Thales, Nokia, Philips, and General Electric; the NHS, Glasgow City Council, ACCESS, Scottish Water, and Police Scotland; in the university sector; and with a number of small and medium-sized enterprises. He has successfully supervised more than 15 PhD students and over 250 MSc students. Professor Antony is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, UK; the Chartered Quality Institute, UK; the Institute of Operations Management, UK; the American Society for Quality; the International Lean Six Sigma Institute; and the Institute of Six Sigma Professionals. In 2023, he was elected to the International Academy of Quality as an Academician, the first ever elected from Scotland and the fourth from the UK. He has recently won a Lifetime Achievement award for his contribution to the field of Lean Six Sigma research from the International Lean Six Sigma Institute, as well as an Outstanding Contribution to Quality Management Practice award from the Chartered Quality Institute, which is the leading professional quality body in the UK.

Dr Raja Jayaraman obtained his PhD in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, USA. Prior to this, he obtained a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from New Mexico State University, USA, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics from universities in India. Prior to joining New Mexico State University, he was working at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Dr Jayaraman has also worked at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, USA. His research interests include optimisation methods, healthcare systems engineering, supply chains, logistics, and quality engineering.

Dr Guilherme Tortorella is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He has more than 12 years of experience as a Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement Manager in the automotive industry, having worked at sites in Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, the UK and the USA. Additionally, he has worked as an Industry Consultant for 7 years. Having published more than 180 journal articles, 2 books and 15 book chapters, his research is mainly focused on operations management, more specifically on lean management, Industry 4.0, and supply chain management. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Lean Systems and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management, International Journal of Lean Six Sigma, Production, and Operations Management Research.

Dr Maher Maalouf received his PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Oklahoma, USA. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, UAE. His research interests include applied operations research, data science and machine learning methods, imbalanced and rare-event data models, pattern recognition, Lean Six Sigma and operational excellence methods.
