Book Description

This book is uniquely designed for a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the robotic grasping and fixturing (RGF) from the multifingered robot hand grasp, humanoid robot hand and basic fixture design principle, and evaluating and planning of robotic grasping/ fixturing. It also focuses on the modeling and applications of the RGF. Three new chapters are added in this edition to cover the relevant basic theories of grasping feature analysis and the new principles of robotic hand design that reproduce the natural motion laws of human hand. Compared with existing publications, this volume concentrates more on abstract formulation, i.e. mathematical modeling of robotic grasping and fixturing. Thus, it will be a good reference text for academic researchers, manufacturing and industrial engineers and a textbook for engineering graduate students.

About the Author

Caihua Xiong is the Chang Jiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, Dean of the School of Medical Equipment Science and Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). Prof. Xiong is a leading expert in human-computer hybrid intelligent systems and robotics. He has made significant contributions to robotic hand design and human-machine integrated systems. Among his numerous awards are the First-Class Prize of Hubei Province Technical Invention Award (2019), the Second-Class Prize of National Technical Invention Award (2016), and the First-Class Prize of the China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Award (2023). He has received the prestigious National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (2010) and was named a Chang Jiang Scholar Distinguished Professor in 2007. Prof. Xiong serves as a Technical Editor for the IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics and as an editorial board member of several international journals, including Assembly Automation and the Journal of Bionic Engineering. He has authored more than 200 publications, including the book Fundamentals of Robotic Grasping and Fixturing (World Scientific, 2007).

Wenbin Chen, is the Huazhong Scholar Distinguished Professor, School of Medical Equipment Science and Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). Prof. Chen specializes in exoskeletal rehabilitation robotics, anthropomorphic prosthetic robotics, and soft robotics. He has received numerous awards, including the First Prize in the China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Invention Award (2023) and the Golden Prize at the 45th and 46th Geneva International Invention Exhibitions (2017, 2018). His work focuses on the development of innovative robotic systems, and he has obtained several Chinese medical device certifications for his inventions. Prof. Chen has published extensively in leading journals, contributing over 100 high-impact research papers. He actively serves on editorial boards of robotics and engineering journals and has received awards for textbook excellence, including the Ministry of Education’s First Prize for Excellent Textbooks (2021).

Han Ding, Professor Ding is the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Dean of the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing Equipment and Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). Prof. Ding is a pioneer in digital manufacturing technology, robotic machining, and intelligent control. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the National Natural Science Award (Second-Class) and the National Science and Technology Progress Awards (Second- and Third-Class). He has published over 260 SCI journal articles and authored four academic books, including Geometric Theories and Methods for Digital Manufacturing of Complex Surfaces (2011). Prof. Ding has served as the Principal Investigator for multiple national research projects, including China’s National 973 Programs. He is an editorial board member of leading journals and has contributed significantly to advancing manufacturing technology both in academia and industry.

Youlun Xiong, Professor Xiong is the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, School of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). Prof. Xiong is a renowned scholar in advanced manufacturing technology, robotics, and precision measurement. He is a recipient of multiple awards, including the National Science and Technology Progress Awards (Second and Third Class) and the Hubei Province Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award (2022). Prof. Xiong has authored several influential books, including Robotics: Modeling, Control, and Vision (2018) and Fundamentals of Robotics (2014). Prof. Xiong has supervised over 40 doctoral students, with two winning the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award. He is a member of the International Federation for the Theory of Machines and Mechanisms and serves on the academic committees of key laboratories in China. He has been an editorial board member of leading journals such as Acta Scientiarum Naturalium Universitatis Scientiarum Sinica and the Journal of Mechanical Engineering.
